Common Questions:

What equipment do I need? Bring your own training gear. You are required to have a mouth guard (your mouthguard MUST NOT be pink or red or any shades around this!). Females above 14 years are required to wear chest guards and groin guards. Males are required to wear a groin guard. Gloves, head gear, elbow guards, shin guards, chest guards are all supplied. IFMA competition uniform is provided for athletes and must be worn. Australian team clothing must be worn at all events. You fight in your IFMA uniform.

Corner person/coaching: Team coaches are allocated for each fighter. All coaching and cornering are at the discretion of the Team Coach. There will be team coaches and assistant coaches appointed. The Team Coach will nominate who is cornering, preparing and training athletes. Athletes own coaches, if attending, must always follow the Head Coaches directions and be a part of the team. Coaches are to be at every competition early and be the last to leave. Weigh in's will be rostered and ALL coaches will be expected to attend when requested. Coach meetings are compulsory for all coaches/assistant coaches. All coaches MUST remain contactable 24hrs during the event. All coaches are there for the entire team, the entire time. Coaches MUST have the tracksuit at all fights as long pants are required for cornering. No assistant coaches are there for their own athlete, this is an international team event and not a fight show.

There is a nominated group of experienced IFMA COACHES who are coaching the team. All athletes and coaches are under the direction of the Head Coach, Leon Spain. He has appointed a few coaches as team coaches, they will be announced soon. Any other person who comes, and is a coach, of their child or others, can only act as assistant coaches if approved. That means warming up, and helping backstage and if the draw allows, seconding a team coach in the corner. This is all at the discretion of the Head Coach. Anyone who wants to come as an assistant coach must be prepared to follow the directions of the Head Coach and that includes helping all other athletes and not favouring or working solely or separately with their own athlete(s). It is a team first and people cannot nominate themselves as coaches.

Entourage: This is everyone not competing or coaching. It is requested that you do not enter any training area, warm up area or get involved with any aspect of your child’s warm up or training unless requested by the Head Coach. At training and at the competition there will be designated warm up and training areas – no parents will be allowed to hang around in this area or be involved with the athlete’s preparation for the competition. Please step back, spectate and support the team and assist the coaching staff by not babysitting your child.

Meetings/training: Team training sessions and meetings are compulsory for ALL athletes and coaches, every day. Fighting or not, still in the competition, or not. No exemptions. Watching all team members compete is always compulsory for the team. There will be a team meeting and a coach meeting every day of the event PLUS extra meetings.

Weigh in's:  All females will weigh under the supervision of a female official. No males will be allowed in the female weigh in tent. They must weigh in every day they are scheduled to compete – 7:00am. No allowances. If you do not make weight or pass the medical that morning - you forfeit the fight. NO ONE is allowed in the weigh in area! Athletes line up early!  When they go into the medical and weigh in, they go alone, so they must be organised. We may not know who is fighting the next day until midnight the night before!

Wai Kru/ Ring entrance:  All fighter MUST wear a Mongkon into the ring, ceil the ring, do three bows, and be prepared to compete. Please ensure you learn this before departing Australia as there is no exceptions at the event.

IFMA rules are clear on this but last year they changed it at the last minute. Please don’t get hung up on it. Athletes should be ready to go over the rope, bow in the centre and seal the ring however they made to go under the rope without the mongkong or through the ropes – be flexible and prepared for any change!

Turkey – learn as much as you can about the country before you go!

Please call 0408570961 – Anthony Manning if you have any questions.
